EL SAM “GIANT PEACOCK BASS”
FLYFISHING - ADVENTURE

EL SAM is a tannin-stained, meandering river in eastern Colombia, part of the Orinoco Drainage. It features oxbow lakes, shallow flats, and diverse habitats like mangroves and forested banks. With limited access and active protection, it offers exceptional opportunities for fly fishing. The river is abundant with peacock bass, known for their size, and aggressive payara, making it a haven for anglers. The thriving ecosystem includes dolphins, giant otters, catfish, and pacu. Overall, EL SAM provides a unique fishing experience with little pressure and excellent chances of landing a trophy fish.

Trip Highlights

Overview

The people of the area are the Puinave. There are less than 5000 Puinave people living in an area the size of Ireland and only 50 thousand inhabitants in total.

The camp is owned by a local Puinave family and all of the guides and crew are from the the closest village. Taking turns throughout the season, it allows the entire community to benefit from the operation.

The majority of the inhabitants are evangelical christians; however, they maintain many traditions from the time before the introduction of Christianity, most prevalent is their language, arts and crafts.

Bocon river is home to the largest known Peacock Bass in the world. On 17 Dec 2021 the largest peacock ever recorded was caught on a casting plug in less than 5 Km from the camp.

The fish weighed just shy of 30lbs and measured 96cm in length. It did not qualify for the all tackle world record due to the scale not being certified and all the measurements being taken in the boat, rather than on land. The fish and angler have been mentioned in the IGFA publications and he is now a member if the IGFA Trophy Peacock Bass Club. This was his second fish in Caño Bocon that challenged the all tackle world record.
